The locomotive used to push the DeLorean was Engine Number 3, built in 1891 by the Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works. From my research, I've surmised that the train scenes were filmed in Jamestown, near or at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park. * According to the Back to the Future Part III production notes, the tracks used were those comprising the Sierra Railroad. Here's a bunch of links with some good photos and information regarding Back To The Future III and the train! The dailies were reviewed at my high school (Glen A. Note: There never was Fox photo stand in that parking lot. Love this thread! I'm a "Back To The Future" fan especially since I worked at the Puente Hills Mall in Hacienda Heights, CA from 1976-1980 which is the location of "Twin Pines"/"Lone Pine" Mall. IIRC, Pee Wee's boxcar was pulled by one of these same Alcos, although the paint job in the movie was their original SP scarlet and gray. On what current line were the modern-day sequences filmed, including the modern single track bridge over "Eastwood Ravine?" On what line were the 1885 sequences filmed on, especially the crash off the bridge? I realize the rescue off the moving locomotive was probably done in studio and that the crash (and much else) were probably SFX but large portions were still filmed on location. It was then struck head on by a train on the modern rail line passing through the fictional "Hill Valley, CA" and destroyed. The time machine then ran out on the single track until it came to a stop.
